Bulletproof Coffee has been around for a while now – but what is it, and why has it taken off globally?
It only has three ingredients, anyone can make it, and it’s said to not only boost your levels of energy and focus, but to give you glossy hair and glowing skin. Sounds amazing right??
Dave Asprey came up with Bulletproof Coffee as part of his Bulletproof Diet. By combining coffee and quality fats he came upon a formula that helps you to feel focused, alert and most importantly satisfied – resulting in steady energy levels—with no crash.
So what is it? Bulletproof Coffee has also been called Butter Coffee – simply it’s a combination of coffee, butter and oil.
The official recipe is:
- 1 cup Bulletproof coffee (brewed)
- 1 tsp. to 2 tbsp. Brain Octane C8 MCT oil
- 1-2 tbsp. grass-fed, unsalted butter or 1-2 tsp. Grass-Fed Ghee
Brew your coffee (8-12 ounces) and combine it with the MCT Oil (can substitute with coconut oil) and butter or ghee using a blender. You’re aiming to blend for 20-30 second until it has the look of a latte.

There’s some powerful science behind the coffee + fats combo. But as with everything, it’s all about the quality of ingredients.
Coffee doesn’t just taste good – as we know, the caffeine in coffee keeps you alert, but it can also boost your metabolism and help you to burn fat for energy. Coffee also delivers antioxidants. The grass-fed butter gives Bulletproof Coffee its distinctly creamy consistency. It provides quality fats which keep you full, as well as butyrate, some Omega-3s, Vitamin A and the fatty acid CLA. Finally, studies have shown that MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides) are more readily utilised by the body for energy than other types of fat, and that they have the ability to actually reduce body fat, as opposed to increasing it.
